wrecklessRecess Skate and Snow along with ATP hosted the 2nd annual wRECklESS Rail Jam, March 13 at Appalachian Ski Mtn. This is one of the only cash purse events in the Southeast for snowboarding. Riders paid a $15.00 entry fee, and all that money went to the Advanced 1st – 3rd place winners. On top of that cash, DC threw in an extra $500 in to the pot.

The rail jam set up that App Terrain Park put together was amazing! Especially if you take into consideration what time of year this is and being in North Carolina. Most people don’t realize how legit shredding in NC is.

Recess Skate and Snow came up with this event concept last year to help push progression in the area, and this year was no different. The setup consisted of a variety of handrail style features, along with some fun polejams, bonks, tranny finders and more just waiting for the riders to get creative and progress on. There were two category levels in this rail jam for both skiers and snowboarders: beginnerish/intermediate and advanced. Guest judges for the event were Windells head digger Keaton Pearson and assistant head digger Chase Weaver.  (more...)

Rome Snowboard Pre Jib Rail Jam, December 2011

If you missed out on the Rome Prejib check out the write up on the Rome site!!
Premature Jibulation: Appalachian Ski Mountain Wrap-Up | Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate 2011prejib
www.romesnowboards.com

The Pre Jib went off on December 5th at Appalachian Ski Mountain (we know, but better late than never). The weather was nice and cold which meant tons of snow for early December in North Carolina and the App Terrain Park hooked us up with the illest set-ups yet.

The set-up rolled with 4 features across so you didn’t have to hike yourself to death and could get hit after hit during the hour-long jam session. There was a sick rail tier with a double-barrel, down rail, down lift tower with a nice little kink in the end, a corrugated tube, and a down box for everyone to enjoy.

The shredding was in full effect from the get-go and judging was not an easy task. Windells Head Digger Keaton Pearson was a huge help as a guest judge for the day. Riley Tardiff really stood out all day and took home a nice prize for the groms. Heather Phillips was throwing it down for the ladies winning herself a sick new pair of Strut bindings. Third place went to TJ Kern who was landing tons of tricks and hiking right past everyone just to get another hit. Kris Jones took second place with some banger tricks and lazy steez, but the stand out of the day coming in first place was Austin Leonard! Hands down some of the gnarliest tricks I have seen in a comp in a while. His half-cab 50-50 front 3 out on the down flat lift tower was ridiculous to say the least.

Recess Wreck Less Recap (from appterrainpark.com)

With such a warm, wet spring so far this season, ATP lucked out this past Saturday, March 27th and hosted the Recess Wreck Less Rail Jam under sunny blue skies, with cool, but spring-ish temperatures. The course was constructed during the week, and held up perfectly with a solid setup the night before. The theme was most definitely urban, handrail style features - with one giant pad and takeoff for 4 different round rails, including a 24 elbow rail, a 30 down-flat-down rail, the 19 OG rail, and the 21 down-flat rail.

The vibe throughout the day was mellow and fun, almost like a regular session with friends in the park. Intermediate ski and snowboard took to the rails first for their 40 minute jam session, and set the bar high, with all sorts of technical combos on all 4 of the features. The intermediate division of riders has been stepping their game up all season, and this event was no exception.

After the first jam session, the top 3 riders for both ski and snowboard were announced, and invited to compete in the Advanced session. Wow what a show for the advanced riders - the open format and long session let people work out creative, difficult, and amazing tricks on all features. 450 disasters, switch back lips through the dub-down rail, spins on and off every rail, and lots more were the reg for the advanced.

Recess structured the event uniquely from any other in the region. After the advanced jam session, 6 snowboarders, and 4 skiers were selected for a finals game of "SHRED" - similar to the game of "HORSE" in basketball.  (for the full story and more pics go to appterrainpark.com)

Rome Pre Jib App Ski

December 6th opening day at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Boone North Carolina.  For the first time in the Southeast Rome SDS presents the Premature Jibulation.  The weather finally turned and the guns were fired up.  Snowmaking was in full affect all night and through the morning.  The park crew was there before sun up checking snow depths and making final decisions on what features were going to be set.  Normally for events the set up gets to go in prior to the day of, but Premature Jibulation allows no such time.  Shredders were lined up waiting for the gates to open.  Charging out onto the slopes and racing for first chair.

The park crew hooked up a sexy set up that consisted of a round rail to lift tower line or flat box to down skinny box.  The course was shredable on all levels of riding and crisscrossing features was encouraged to add a little chaos.  Around 80 competitors slashing it out for an hour straight plus the casual snaking of the two-plankers, and plenty of Motorhead blasting out of the speakers; the Premature Jibulating was in full force.

The level of ripping from the groms, ladies, and slashers made the picks for finals quite difficult.  After the hour long jam session we jumped right into a final 30 minute shred fest with selected standout riders.  Little Gus Gordon took home a nice schwag kit for the groms and Leigh Wright claimed the package for the ladies.  Cline Ingle took 3rd place winning a new Rome Jacket, Kris Jones coming in 2nd with a new pair of United Bindings, and 1st place winning a new Garage Rocker was Cody Boan.

Everyone dusted off their shred sticks from all over North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and brought there A game to the pre jib.  Great event and huge thanks to Rome Snowboards, Appalachian Ski Mountain, Recess Ride Shop, and all the competitors that made it out.

Recess Skate and Snow —It’s Time to Play!

High Country Press

Remember the anticipation for the school bell to ring signaling recess? That’s the reminiscence John Paul Pardy chose to use in naming his new snow and skateboard shop, celebrating its grand opening this Thursday, November 12, at Dragonfly Theater and Pub, located on Boone Heights Drive in Boone.

“Recess says to me it’s time to play,” Pardy said.

It’s more than apparent when talking with the new entrepreneur that he believes that boarding is more than just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. And according to him, he has designed his new shop located at 1158 Highway 105 to offer everything an aficionado or beginner needs to assume the shredding role.(read more)
